Ehsan Momeni, the Deputy Operations Chief of Tehran Traffic Police, emphasized the importance of license plates in identifying vehicles and maintaining order and security on the streets during a press conference. He stated that a vehicle's license plate not only identifies the owner but also plays a key role in tracking violations and uncovering crimes.

Consequences of Tampering with License Plates

Momeni pointed out that tampering, defacing, or covering a license plate can disrupt the tracking of violations, stating: "This act encourages traffic violations and reckless behavior. Therefore, the Traffic Police have prioritized addressing these violations in their agenda."

This police official reminded that according to Article 720 of the Islamic Penal Code, tampering or defacing a license plate is considered a crime and is punishable by imprisonment from 6 months to 1 year. He also announced that a special task force has been established to control and address license plate violations in the capital, with specific officers assigned to identify and deal with these violations in various areas.

Statistics on Violations and Solutions

Momeni, presenting statistics on license plate violations in Mehr 1405, announced that over 73,000 license plate violations have been enforced. Of this number, more than 24,000 cases were related to motorcyclists and over 49,000 cases were related to vehicles. Additionally, in this month, over 22,000 cases of license plate coverings have been removed.

He further referred to cumulative statistics from the beginning of the current year until the end of Mehr and said: "During this period, over 271,000 license plate violations have been enforced. This statistic demonstrates the serious determination of the police to deal with offenders."

Momeni also mentioned the mechanism for dealing with offenders and said: "For some offending drivers, educational classes are held, but in cases where the license plate has been tampered with, the vehicle is quickly moved to a parking lot and a case is opened for the offender."

In conclusion, emphasizing the seriousness of the police in addressing license plate violations, he urged citizens to report any violations they observe through the 'My Police' system or by calling 110.
