A child showing symptoms of illness, especially in autumn, can create worries in families. Is my child's condition bad enough to take them to the doctor, or should they stay home for a few days and get better? This is a question many parents face. In fact, children's bodies usually cope with viruses with a little rest and warm fluids, but there is a fine line between a simple cold and dangerous symptoms.

When to See a Doctor

If your child has a runny nose, coughs occasionally, or has a slight fever, there is usually no need for immediate concern. In these situations, the best course of action is to provide plenty of fluids, rest, and nutritious food. However, parents should note that the child's behavior and overall condition are more important than the number on the thermometer. A child with a fever who is still playing and drinking fluids is in a better state than a child who is lethargic and unresponsive.

Anytime the illness is not following a normal course or the child's sleep and appetite are disrupted, a visit to the doctor is necessary. Additionally, there are symptoms that parents should seek medical attention for without delay:

  • Severe fevers: If an infant under three months has a temperature of 38 degrees or higher, you should see a doctor immediately. A fever above 40 degrees in children can be dangerous.
  • Change in breathing rhythm: If the child is noticeably breathing rapidly or their cough becomes harsher, it's time to consult a doctor.
  • Dehydration: If the child's urine is scant or dark-colored and they have no desire to drink water, this is a serious sign of dehydration.
  • Return of symptoms: If the child feels better for two days and then their fever and cough return, a doctor should be consulted.

Dangerous Symptoms

Some symptoms require immediate attention and the child should be taken to the nearest emergency room. These symptoms include:

  • Difficult breathing and skin pulling in between the ribs or under the child's chest.
  • Change in lip or facial color to bluish or gray.
  • Severe chest pain, seizures, or fainting.
  • The child is hard to wake and does not respond to being called.

Having a doctor familiar with your child's medical history can help you in diagnosis and treatment. This doctor knows which symptoms are normal for your child and which are not, and can order necessary tests if needed.

To act easily in emergencies, it's best to always have a few essential items on hand. These include tissues, saline drops, or nasal spray. Additionally, timely review and administration of the flu vaccine at the beginning of the cold season is also very important.

Ultimately, no test can work better than your inner sense about your child. If you feel that something is wrong, even if you don't see a specific symptom, do not delay consulting a doctor. These calls are often for the parents' peace of mind, to know that everything is under control.
