Tomatoes, this colorful and delicious fruit recognized as one of the main components of Iranian tables, can play an important role in men's health. Dr. Lori Schneider, a nutrition specialist in North Carolina, has recently concluded in her research that consuming cooked tomatoes can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Lycopene and Its Impact on Health

Tomatoes get their red color from lycopene, a carotenoid antioxidant. These red pigments are found in foods such as tomatoes, beets, and red peppers, acting as protectors against free radicals. Free radicals can damage genes and play a role in the onset of diseases such as prostate cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Schneider emphasizes the importance of consuming a colorful plate of vegetables daily, as each color represents different plant nutrients.

The Role of Cooking in Nutrient Absorption

In raw tomatoes, a large portion of lycopene is trapped within the cellular structure of the fruit. However, heat can break down the cell walls and convert lycopene into a form that the body can absorb more easily. A study in 2007 showed that lycopene in heated tomato sauce is more readily absorbed than lycopene in raw sauce. This is particularly important in preventing prostate cancer.

Additionally, a systematic review and meta-analysis in 2018 showed that consuming foods containing tomatoes, especially cooked pastes and sauces, is associated with a reduced risk of prostate cancer. The results of this research indicate that the more individuals consume these foods, the lower their risk of developing prostate cancer.

Both Raw and Cooked Tomatoes Are Important

Despite the emphasis on the benefits of cooked tomatoes, none of the findings suggest that raw tomatoes should be discarded. Sliced tomatoes on a sandwich or a handful of cherry tomatoes in a salad still provide lycopene, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Cooked tomatoes can be considered an advantage, not a substitute.

Ultimately, it can be concluded that tomatoes, as a nutrient-rich food, whether raw or cooked, can play a significant role in maintaining health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Therefore, by adding this fruit to your diet, you can contribute to your health.
