The U.S. Air Force has decided to halt the retirement process of the B-1B and B-2 bombers, which was scheduled for the early 2030s, in order to upgrade these aircraft. This action, along with the expansion of the strategic air fleet, demonstrates America's serious commitment to strengthening its military capabilities globally.

Budget and Upgrade Plans

According to U.S. Air Force budget documents, over $342 million has been allocated for upgrading the B-1B bombers and about $1.35 billion for the B-2 bombers from fiscal years 2027 to 2031. A significant portion of this budget will be spent on increasing the combat weapon carrying capacity of the B-1B bombers. Specifically, the purchase of 145 launch systems is planned for 2027, and the capability to carry weapons on external stations will also be restored.

Additionally, another $27 million has been requested for the installation of a new satellite communication system. This system will enable communication with the command center and target changes during flight, and the related equipment for this system will be purchased for 18 aircraft in 2027.

B-2 Bomber Update

For the B-2 bomber, plans are in place to replace its old launch systems. This will allow the aircraft to carry more weapons and utilize a wider variety of munitions. The U.S. Air Force also intends to upgrade the B-2's radar equipment, as its old processors frequently fail, posing a threat to the combat readiness of these aircraft.

The procurement of necessary parts for this upgrade will begin in 2027, with the installation of new equipment planned for 2029. These changes and improvements reflect the U.S. Air Force's determination to maintain air superiority and enhance its military capabilities against global threats.
