Wang Yi, China's Foreign Minister, urged Israel to end "imposed" settlement construction in the occupied West Bank and to cancel the actions taken in this regard. The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Mr. Wang, on Thursday, October 15, in a meeting with Isaac Herzog, the President of Israel, referred to the Palestinian issue as "the greatest historical injustice of the present century."

China's Support for the Palestinian Cause

China has long supported the Palestinian cause and believes that the solution of establishing two independent states, Israel and Palestine, is the right path to resolve this conflict. Beijing has also sought to play a mediating role in Middle Eastern disputes. In 2023, China facilitated the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia after years of tension and hostility.

Humanitarian and Security Challenges in Gaza

Earlier this year, China, along with Pakistan, participated in efforts to establish a ceasefire in the war between the U.S. and Israel with Iran. China's efforts to help end the Gaza war have primarily focused on creating unity among Palestinian groups. In 2024, China managed to bring rival Palestinian factions to an agreement to form a "temporary national reconciliation government" that was supposed to take over the administration of the occupied West Bank and Gaza after the war with Israel. However, this agreement was never implemented.

Now, Wang Yi states that the "immediate priority" is the complete reopening of access routes to Gaza and preventing the expansion of a "humanitarian disaster" in the region. In his meeting with the President of Israel, he said that China is ready to work with the international community to encourage the parties involved to resume dialogue and "find a political solution" to end the conflict.

Isaac Herzog wrote in a message on the social media platform X that he was "pleased" with the meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister and that their discussions focused on the relations between the two countries and developments in the Middle East. He emphasized Israel's desire to establish peace in the region and referred to strategic threats to their national security, particularly from Iran and its proxy forces.

One year after the ceasefire in Gaza, residents of the area still face the threat of Israeli attacks, displacement, and problems arising from food insecurity. Although extensive bombings in Gaza have stopped, Israel continues its attacks in the region almost daily. Since the ceasefire was established in October 2025, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza.

The ceasefire, mediated by the U.S., was the first phase of an agreement to end the Gaza war; a war that began following a deadly attack led by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023. However, progress towards the next phase of this agreement has stalled, and Israel and Hamas accuse each other of violating its terms.
