The surprising flood that swept through Gilan and Mazandaran in recent days affected the lives of thousands. Heavy rainfall, which reached over 220 millimeters in some areas, quickly turned into a devastating flood, causing significant damage to people and infrastructure.
Damages and Challenges Ahead
In Gilan province, Amlash recorded the highest rainfall at 144 millimeters, while in Mazandaran, Salmanshahr faced 224 millimeters of rainfall. These rains not only damaged residential homes but also put public infrastructure under pressure. Estimates indicate that in Mazandaran, at least 772 residential units were damaged, with financial losses exceeding 5 billion tomans.

Residents of the village of Zarrinabad in Sari are suffering greatly from the destructive effects of the flood. One resident, Shahin Sofichai, described the situation: "From the very beginning of the rain, the flood started. Water and electricity were also cut off." Sofichai expressed concern about the damages, adding: "All the carpets and the floor of the house got wet and muddy, and muddy water made its way into every house."
Bitter Experiences from the Flood in Rasht
In Rasht, 44-year-old Hassan Heydari described the flood: "An hour after the rain started, we practically couldn't move in the streets, and Rasht had turned into an aquarium." He continued: "The surface water drainage infrastructure was filled within an hour, and the water overflowed into the streets." According to him, the damage to vehicles was also significant, and the water had risen so much that it entered the engines of some cars.
Heydari criticized the architecture of houses in Rasht, which, due to design errors, are vulnerable to heavy rains, saying: "Many houses are built with Tehran-style roofs that are not suitable for heavy rainfall." He also pointed to the increase in construction, stating: "This issue has exacerbated the situation."
The flood gradually receded after a day and night, and service forces quickly sprang into action, but the weakness of the water transfer system infrastructure was evident. Heydari concluded: "This volume of water was beyond the capacity of the infrastructure, and there is a need for a review of design and construction practices."
