Tehran Municipality proudly recognized as one of the winners of the Global Green City Awards 2026. At the award ceremony held in Bari, Italy, two major projects of this entity, namely 'Farahzad Ecopark' and 'Green Renaissance of Tehran; Economic Resilience through Sustainable Urban Vegetation Management', received certificates of appreciation. The jury deemed these projects worthy of recognition due to their innovation, creativity, and green approach.
Green Projects of Tehran Municipality
The 'Farahzad Ecopark' project, which focuses on the restoration and organization of the Farahzad river valley, is defined as a trans-regional plan. This project is divided into three phases, with the first phase covering an area of 54 hectares, set to be operational in November 2024. The second phase of this project, which spans approximately 103 hectares, has reached 95% completion and is scheduled to be operational in 2026.
Alongside this project, the 'Green Renaissance of Tehran' plan is also being implemented with the aim of converting plant waste and green spaces into useful resources for environmental preservation and cost reduction. In this plan, plants and pruning waste are transformed into necessary products such as fertilizers and plant compost, natural pesticides, and wooden structures. The development of greenhouses and urban farms, the production of drought-resistant plants, and creating job opportunities for women are also among the objectives of this plan. The main idea of this plan is 'Nature for Nature', which seeks to create a sustainable economic cycle from plant waste.
Importance of the Global Green City Awards
The AIPH Global Green City Awards are recognized as one of the most significant international programs in the field of green urban planning and utilizing nature and vegetation in urban development. These awards are given to projects that use plant and nature-based solutions to enhance climate resilience and protect biodiversity. In 2026, 9 urban projects were introduced as deserving recognition.
The projects of Tehran Municipality were introduced to these global competitions thanks to the International Affairs Department of the Tehran Municipality Communication and International Affairs Center and the Tehran City Studies and Planning Center. This success is not only a sign of Tehran Municipality's continuous efforts to improve the environment and the quality of life for citizens but also serves as a model for other cities in sustainable development and natural resource management.
