Sutlacı is one of the authentic and nostalgic Turkish desserts that, with its delicate flavor of milk and aroma of vanilla, turns any dining table into a pleasant experience. This dessert is a clever combination of stale bread, milk, and sugar that can creatively become a luxurious yet simple dessert.
How to Make Sutlacı
To prepare Sutlacı, we need the following ingredients: about 200 grams of stale bread, 1 liter of full-fat milk, 1 cup of sugar, 50 grams of butter, 1 teaspoon of vanilla, 1 to 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (optional), 1 egg (optional), and decorative ingredients such as cinnamon, walnuts, pistachios, and grated chocolate.

The most important point in making Sutlacı is choosing the right bread. The bread should be stale and a bit dry; fresh bread will cause the dessert to become mushy and have an unsuitable texture. Simple breads like stale toast or baguette are the best options.
Cooking Method
To prepare the dessert, first pour the milk into a pot and place it over low heat. Add the sugar and butter to the milk and stir until dissolved. If you want a thicker dessert, dissolve the cornstarch in a little cold milk and then add it to the mixture.
Cut the bread into thin slices and arrange them in a suitable dish. Gently pour the warm milk mixture over the bread, ensuring that the bread is completely soaked in the milk. Then leave the dish for 15 to 30 minutes to allow the bread to soften.
For cooking, you can use two methods: cooking over low heat or baking in the oven. In the first method, transfer the mixture to a pot and stir continuously until it thickens. In the second method, place the dish in the oven at 180 degrees to caramelize the surface of the dessert.
After cooking, cool the dessert at room temperature and then refrigerate for at least 2 to 3 hours. Before serving, decorate the dessert with cinnamon, walnuts, or chocolate and serve it cold or at room temperature.
