Star Shirali, Deputy for Economic Supervision and Inspection of the General Inspection Organization of the country, warned in a letter to the Minister of Energy about the occurrence of the climatic phenomenon "El Niño" and emphasized the necessity for maximum preparedness of the water sector and its affiliated companies to face extreme rainfall, flooding, and waterlogging.
Likelihood of Heavy Rainfall and Resulting Damages
Shirali, while referring to the analyses of the Meteorological Organization, noted that although increased rainfall could provide an opportunity for water storage in the country's large dams, heavy rains over short periods can cause significant damage to urban and rural infrastructure, agricultural lands, and water transfer networks. This issue underscores the necessity of taking preventive measures, especially under the current conditions.

Preventive Approach in Flood Management
The Deputy of the General Inspection Organization emphasized that utilizing past experiences and adopting a preventive approach in flood management is now of heightened importance. Revising the management of dam reservoirs, dredging rivers to increase flood flow capacity, enhancing the operational readiness of regional water companies, and protecting construction project sites are among the key areas that need immediate attention.
Shirali also stressed the necessity of planning for artificial recharge of aquifers and managing water consumption in drought-affected areas to prevent any waste of water resources. At the end of this correspondence, while issuing a warning based on the preventive policies of the Inspection Organization, he requested the Deputy of Water and Wastewater of the Ministry of Energy, the Iran Water Resources Management Company, and other relevant units to take necessary operational measures according to the conditions of each region and report the results of the actions taken to this organization.
