The School Mayor Project allows students to closely understand the concept of urban management and experience social responsibilities as little mayors in their schools. This program, implemented in collaboration with the Education Department of Tehran and the city of Rey, is currently running in 700 girls' and boys' schools.
Familiarization with the Social Participation Process
The main goal of this project is to familiarize students with the process of social participation and responsibility. By implementing this project, students can identify existing problems in schools and their surrounding environment and seek to solve them. This experience helps students gain a better understanding of their role in society and develop a spirit of participation from their teenage years.
School Elections; A Practice for the Future
In this project, for the first time, the decrees for school mayors have been signed by the Mayor of Tehran, indicating the special importance of this program for urban management. Students in this project are selected as candidates for voting and experience the stages of campaigning and competition under the supervision of a committee at the school. Ultimately, a school mayor is elected through student voting.
This program gives students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the electoral process and urban management. The Tehran Municipality, by providing this infrastructure, aims to create the necessary conditions for holding elections in schools.
Focusing on Urban Problems and Collaborating with Parents
The Tehran Municipality is also looking to utilize the capacities of students and collaborate with school parents to address educational and urban issues. According to the guidelines sent to various regions, school mayors can examine urban problems within a 500-meter radius of the school. This program allows students to go beyond their small environment and tackle larger urban challenges.
In joint meetings that these school mayors will have with the mayors of districts and areas, necessary solutions for the identified problems will be discussed. Thus, students, in interaction with urban institutions, can play their role in improving social and urban conditions.
For each school mayor, three deputies will be selected in the areas of urban services and environment, cultural-social-educational, and technical-engineering. These deputies will be in contact with their counterparts in the district municipality to coordinate necessary actions to resolve issues.
Overall, the School Mayor Project, as a new initiative, provides students with the opportunity to feel responsible not only in school but also in a larger community, becoming acquainted with the real challenges and opportunities of urban life.
