REM sleep (rapid eye movement sleep) and deep sleep are vital stages of sleep that play an important role in reducing the risk of various diseases. Researchers monitored the status of over 95,000 adults who used wrist monitors for seven consecutive nights. This study examined different stages of sleep, including REM sleep, deep sleep, and light sleep.
The Link Between REM Sleep and Diseases
In this research, the scientists reviewed the medical records of these individuals over the next nine years to find possible connections with over 1,000 different diseases. The results showed that more REM sleep was associated with a reduced risk of 83 diseases, including heart failure, dementia, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and MS (multiple sclerosis). These findings emphasize the importance of REM sleep as an effective stage in disease prevention.

Deep Sleep and Its Impact on Health
Deep sleep, also considered a restorative stage, has been associated with a reduced risk of seven conditions, including type 2 diabetes, major depression, and sleep apnea. These findings indicate that sleep quality, especially in its various stages, has a significant impact on overall health.
Researchers also emphasized the importance of getting six to eight hours of sleep per night. Individuals who achieved this amount of sleep showed the lowest likelihood of developing 69 types of diseases. In contrast, those who slept less than five hours had the highest likelihood of developing 37 types of diseases. These results highlight the importance of adequate sleep for maintaining health and reducing the risk of various diseases.
This study is an observational research and cannot prove that sleep patterns cause diseases, but it only shows a correlation between them. Further research is needed to understand the cause of this issue. However, these findings can serve as a guide for individuals seeking to improve their sleep quality.
