Nasal mucus is a natural component of the body that plays an important role in defending the respiratory system. This substance is not only continuously produced by the body but also significantly increases during a cold. At this time, many people are concerned about swallowing nasal mucus and its impact on their health.

Mucociliary Clearance: A Natural Process

The tiny cilia that cover the inner surface of the nose and airways continuously move mucus towards the back of the throat. This process, known as "mucociliary clearance," is considered one of the body's defense mechanisms. In fact, even when we are completely healthy, we swallow some nasal mucus without realizing it.

Mucus and Viruses: Reality or Myth

During a cold, nasal secretions may contain viruses, leading to the perception that swallowing mucus could reintroduce the virus into the body. However, the reality is that swallowed mucus is transferred to the digestive system and cannot return from the stomach to the nose. To date, no credible evidence has been found to suggest that swallowing nasal secretions exacerbates a cold.

Even from a therapeutic perspective, there is insufficient evidence to show that expelling all mucus from the nose can reduce the duration of illness. A systematic review on nasal irrigation indicates that this method may alleviate some symptoms but does not have a significant impact on shortening the duration of illness.

Blowing the Nose: Risks and Benefits

Blowing the nose also requires attention. A study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases found that blowing the nose can create significant pressure in the nose and push thick fluid into the sinuses. Although this study does not directly indicate that blowing the nose causes sinusitis, it suggests that excessive blowing may have complications.

Therefore, if you have a cold and your nasal secretions are going towards the back of your throat, do not worry about swallowing it. This process is part of the body's natural cleansing system. If your nose is severely congested, gentle blowing or using a saline solution may be beneficial, but the goal is not to expel the virus.
