Mehdi Babaei, the head of the Safety and Crisis Committee of the Islamic City Council of Tehran, announced the resolution of more than 10 flood bottlenecks in Tehran on the sidelines of the training course "Flood and Survival in Difficult Conditions." This course, which lasts for two days, aims to enhance preparedness in facing urban floods and is conducted in collaboration with 33 service-providing agencies in the vicinity of the Taleqan Dam.
Preventive Measures in Flood Management
Babaei praised the organizers of this drill and emphasized the importance of coordination and cooperation among various agencies during crises. He referred to his 23 years of experience in the Tehran Municipality and said: "During this time, I have faced severe flooding and waterlogging multiple times. This shows that urban management has always been engaged with this issue and must be adequately prepared to face incidents."
He also pointed out the importance of conducting specialized drills in the field of flooding and said: "Training and coordinating forces during a crisis can play a decisive role in reducing damages and managing conditions effectively."
Flood Management with Underground Measures
The head of the Safety and Crisis Committee of the Tehran City Council further referred to preventive measures regarding flooding and said: "Over the past decades, approximately 550 kilometers of underground tunnels and channels have been constructed in Tehran to manage floods properly." He added: "During this period of urban management, at least 10 flood bottlenecks have been resolved, which has led to significant improvements in flood management conditions in Tehran."
Babaei, referring to the flood situation in Tehran in previous years, stated that fortunately, Tehran has not faced widespread flooding for about 40 years. However, he emphasized that educational actions and preparedness for facing floods should not be neglected.
He also considered the risk of flooding and waterlogging as one of the most serious crises imaginable for Tehran and said: "This crisis must always be a focus for urban management. Preparedness in urban management and conducting drills must be pursued continuously so that we can have effective management capabilities during incidents."
With predictions of heavy rainfall this year, Babaei regarded the holding of skill-enhancing drills as one of the effective solutions for increasing urban management preparedness and said: "These drills significantly help strengthen coordination among service-providing agencies and should be sustained."
