The installation of 500 new cameras to control the average speed of vehicles on Tehran highways is considered one of the most important programs for the development of intelligent traffic systems. Akbar Ekhtiyari, CEO of Tehran Traffic Control Company, announced that 168 cameras from this set have been installed so far, and the implementation of this plan has begun on Shahid Hemmat and Imam Ali (AS) highways.

Improving Traffic Conditions with New Cameras

The CEO of Tehran Traffic Control Company stated that the placement of the cameras was done based on accident studies and in collaboration with the traffic police and the safety and traffic departments of Tehran Municipality. Areas with a higher history of accidents have been prioritized so that the installation of these cameras increases the safety of traffic on highways.

These cameras have the capability to calculate the average speed of vehicles between two cameras, and information about potential violations is sent to the traffic police. Ekhtiyari also mentioned that alongside speed control cameras, thousands of surveillance and violation registration cameras are active throughout Tehran, monitoring violations such as running red lights.

Monitoring Traffic Lights

Akbar Ekhtiyari emphasized the importance of traffic lights in managing the traffic network, stating that these lights have also received special attention in the traffic improvement program. Actions such as providing emergency power and installing UPS systems to prevent light outages have been implemented. According to the Traffic Control Company, there are currently no intersections without functioning lights in the network.

The CEO of Tehran Traffic Control Company explained that in conjunction with the approaching start of the school year, the company began a special review of intelligent transportation systems about two months ago. Contractors, along with specialized teams, have inspected the status of cameras and equipment throughout the city and have addressed deficiencies.

Infrastructure for Motorcycle License Plate Recognition

Furthermore, Ekhtiyari announced the preparation of the necessary technical infrastructure for recognizing motorcycle license plates through some existing cameras. Cameras that capture images from behind vehicles will have the capability to recognize motorcycle license plates after software updates. This measure will be implemented upon the decision and issuance of relevant operational regulations regarding motorcycle technical inspections.

Given the importance of these programs in improving traffic conditions and safety in Tehran, it can be expected that the installation of these cameras and the enhancement of monitoring infrastructure will have positive impacts on reducing accidents and increasing order in vehicle traffic.
