Hormone therapy, as an effective method for reducing mood swings in menopausal women, has attracted the attention of researchers. In a new study, it was found that after the administration of hormone replacement therapy, the percentage of women experiencing severe mood symptoms decreased from 62% to less than 25%. These findings suggest that hormone therapy can help improve psychological symptoms and sleep issues in various patient groups, including women with a history of psychiatric problems.
The Impact of Hormone Therapy on Mood
Researchers in this study noted that it is estimated that up to 68% of menopausal women suffer from issues such as depression, irritability, anxiety, and mental fatigue. These problems are usually caused by hormonal changes during menopause and can last for a decade or more. Particularly, estrogen is associated with improved blood flow in the brain and neuron function, which is why it has a positive effect on mood.
Details of the Study and Its Results
In this study, the status of 260 women who were treated at the "NYU Langone" midlife and menopause health center between January 2023 and April 2025 was examined. All these women received hormone therapy approved by official authorities and completed a menopause symptom checklist before and after treatment. At the beginning of the study, more than 3 out of every 5 women experienced severe mood problems, but after hormone therapy, less than a quarter of the women reported still experiencing mood swings.
Researchers emphasized that the greatest improvement was observed in women who had the most severe mood swings, and the response rate to treatment did not vary based on age, stage of menopause, psychiatric history, or the use of antidepressant medications in women. Experts say that the transition to menopause can be very turbulent and distressing in terms of mood, affecting personal relationships and disrupting work performance. Identifying and addressing mood-related symptoms can make a real and effective difference.
