The aging of an individual is the result of a collection of life experiences, relationships, losses, opportunities, and economic and social pressures that have been faced over the years. Therefore, aging cannot be viewed solely from the perspective of physical changes or increasing care needs; aging is a continuation of a journey that began many years ago.

The Experience of the Elderly Generation in Iran

The generation that is now approaching or entering old age has spent a significant part of its youth and adulthood during a period of profound social and economic transformations, and for many individuals, in the shadow of the Iran-Iraq war. This generation has also faced numerous economic and social changes, changes in family structure, urbanization, and economic pressures.

Now, some of these individuals are entering old age in circumstances that are also accompanied by new issues; from retirement and chronic illnesses to treatment costs and reduced independence. In such conditions, the question about aging in Iran is not just how much the elderly population will increase; a more important question is what quality of aging these individuals will experience and what conditions society has provided for their aging.

Challenges of Mental Health in Aging

The experience of aging is influenced by various factors; from economic status and physical health to family relationships, social support, sense of independence, and mental health. For an individual who has faced loss, illness, economic pressure, or multiple crises throughout their life, entering old age can coincide with other changes; retirement, loss of certain social roles, decreased physical ability, and greater dependence on others.

In such conditions, the boundary between physical, psychological, and social issues of aging becomes very thin. Mental health is also an inseparable part of the aging experience. Feelings of loneliness, anxiety, grief, loss of social roles, and worries about the future can affect the quality of life of the elderly. However, this does not mean that aging is necessarily accompanied by mental illness.

The issue is recognizing the factors that can make a healthy, active, and meaningful period of aging difficult or possible. In this regard, we must ask ourselves: How does a generation that has spent part of its youth in crisis age today? And does a society that is aging prepare only for increased longevity, or does it also have plans for the years in which this life will continue with security, independence, and mental health?

For this reason, when we talk about aging in Iran, we must pay attention to the accumulation of difficult experiences throughout life. Research shows that adversities such as violence, discrimination, and poverty can be associated with depression and cognitive problems in aging. The physical and mental status of the elderly cannot be examined separately from their life history.

Ultimately, the quality of life of the elderly depends on multiple factors; from economic status and physical health to social support and a sense of control over life. Two elderly individuals of the same age may have completely different experiences of aging because they enter this stage with different life histories, health statuses, and economic resources.
