Davood Abdollahzadeh, the senior manager of Line 5 of Tehran Metro, announced the opening of a smoking room at Sadeghiyeh station. This initiative aims to reduce the harassment of passengers and citizens due to tobacco use in metro stations. Given that Sadeghiyeh station and other stations on Line 5 are designed as open-air, some passengers would smoke inside the stations, which caused problems for other individuals present in the stations.
Creating a suitable space for tobacco use
To address this issue, after multiple consultations, it was decided to pilot a smoking room at the northern platform of Sadeghiyeh station. Abdollahzadeh stated: "The goal of creating this room is to reduce other citizens' exposure to tobacco smoke and to provide a suitable space for users." This room is designed so that passengers can smoke there without disturbing others.

Counseling services for passengers
The Anti-Tobacco Society is also present in this room to facilitate the provision of counseling services for passengers. The contact number for this society is posted on the walls of the room, and in the coming days, a counselor from this society will be present at this location to provide tobacco cessation counseling to passengers. These consultations will be offered free of charge to citizens so that users can seize the opportunity to quit smoking with the help of counselors.
Abdollahzadeh added: "We hope that with this initiative, not only will the harassment of passengers decrease, but we will also be able to assist those who wish to quit tobacco. This room can serve as a suitable starting point for individuals trying to quit smoking. In fact, our goal is to create a healthier environment for all citizens."
This initiative comes at a time when the statistics on tobacco use in society remain concerning, and many individuals continue this harmful habit for various reasons. By creating such a space, there is hope that the culture of tobacco use will decline, and more individuals will be encouraged to quit this harmful habit.
