Approximately 400 bone fractures are recorded daily in Iran, a statistic that alone serves as a warning for public health. These fractures primarily occur due to osteoporosis, a silent disease that many individuals are unaware of until they suffer a serious injury.

Osteoporosis; The Silent Disease

Osteoporosis means a decrease in bone density and an increased risk of fractures. According to reports, about 80 percent of individuals with this disease are unaware of their condition. This is particularly concerning for women after menopause and individuals over 50 years old. At these ages, hormonal changes and decreased calcium absorption can significantly increase the risk of developing osteoporosis.

The Importance of Nutrition and Exercise in Prevention

The good news is that by changing lifestyle, osteoporosis can be prevented. Proper nutrition, regular exercise, and adequate intake of vitamins and minerals, including calcium and vitamin D, can help increase bone density. Consuming calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, leafy greens, and fish can play a significant role in preventing this disease. Additionally, weight-bearing and resistance exercises like walking, running, and swimming can help strengthen bones.

Currently, doctors and public health specialists recommend that individuals undergo regular check-ups and necessary tests to be aware of their bone health. This awareness is especially important for those with a family history of osteoporosis.

Consequences of Bone Fractures

Bone fractures can lead not only to pain and disability but also have economic and social consequences. Treatment costs, reduced quality of life, and temporary or permanent disabilities are all negative outcomes of this condition. Therefore, preventing osteoporosis and related fractures should be a priority in health programs.

Ultimately, paying attention to bone health and taking actions to prevent osteoporosis can alleviate a heavy burden from the country's healthcare system and help improve the quality of life for millions. In this regard, raising awareness and education about healthy nutrition and appropriate physical activities is of special importance.
