10,000 Iranian men aged over 60 married again last year. This statistic indicates that love and the desire to build a new life still exist even in old age. Alireza Rahimi, the Deputy for Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Sports and Youth, announced in an interview on the occasion of the Elderly Day that in 1404, more than 10,000 marriages for men over 60 were registered in the country. This number represents 2.4 percent of the total marriages registered in the country.

Age Distribution and Differences Between Men and Women

Among these men, about 3,300 are in the age range of 60 to 64 years, nearly 2,700 are between 65 and 69 years, and more than 4,000 are 70 years and older. In comparison, the number of registered marriages for women over 60 is only 2,136, which constitutes about half a percent of the total marriages in the country. Thus, the number of marriages for men over 60 is nearly five times that of women in the same age group.

Social Challenges and Loneliness in Old Age

Rahimi also pointed out that the capital has the highest number of marriages among elderly men and women. Following Tehran, the provinces of Khorasan Razavi and East Azerbaijan rank next. However, among elderly women, the provinces of Semnan, Gilan, and Mazandaran have the highest ratio of elderly marriages to the total marriages in their provinces. Among men, Mazandaran, Semnan, and Markazi lead the list.

While the marriage statistics are significant, Rahimi also addressed the issue of loneliness. About 88 percent of elderly men have spouses, while this ratio for elderly women reaches 59 percent. Therefore, approximately 1,770,000 elderly women in the country live without a spouse due to the death of their partner.

These statistics show that cohabitation for all elderly individuals does not mean staying together until the end of life. In 1404, more than 8,600 divorces for men over 60 and more than 3,100 divorces for women over 60 were registered. These figures indicate that even in old age, emotional and social choices continue.
