Why should we give £24 billion in subsidies to profitable banks?

In today's financial world, serious questions are being raised about large subsidies to commercial banks. The Bank of England allocates £24 billion annually from public resources to these profitable institutions by paying 3.75% interest on banks' reserves. This payment is made solely to control banks' borrowing rates.

Smarter economy, less subsidy

Considering that the Bank of England oversees about £640 billion in reserves, this large subsidy, instead of helping improve the economic situation, adds to the profitability of banks and is seen as a form of unfair resource distribution. Do we really need to give this substantial amount to commercial banks?

Many experts believe that simple changes in the payment system could reduce public costs. For example, the bank could pay interest only on a portion of the reserves, which could lead to cost reductions and increased efficiency. If the Bank of England announces that only 20% of the reserves will earn interest, this change could result in savings of over £19 billion a year.

Controlling rates and saving resources

With a smarter approach, the Bank of England could more effectively control borrowing rates while preventing waste of public resources. This situation would not only benefit the national economy but also demonstrate a serious commitment to improving the country's economic and financial conditions.

Therefore, while some politicians are looking to impose taxes on banks, it may be better to consider cutting unnecessary subsidies to profitable banks instead. Is it not time to answer the question: why should we subsidize profitable banks?
