Tooth decay in 80% of 6-year-old children in Iran is a bitter reality that Zahra Ghorbani, the Director General of the Oral and Dental Health Office of the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, has pointed out. She announced the launch of the oral health campaign with the slogan "Brush twice a day, for 2 minutes each time," starting from October 17, emphasizing that this program is dedicated to educating about oral health in schools across the country.

Preventive Measures for Children

According to Ghorbani's statements, an educational message will be delivered in schools nationwide every day during this campaign. Topics such as the importance of proper brushing, care for permanent tooth number 6, the necessity of visiting the dentist, and healthy nutrition will be taught to students. However, statistics show that over 80% of children at age 6 suffer from tooth decay, with these children averaging about 5 decayed primary teeth.

Concerning Situation in Older Age Groups

Ghorbani also referred to the oral health status in older age groups, stating that in the 35 to 44 age group, the index of extracted and filled teeth has reached 13. The situation is even more alarming for those over 65, with about half of these individuals facing complete toothlessness. This data underscores the necessity for greater attention to preventive measures starting from childhood.

The Director General of Oral and Dental Health at the Ministry of Health emphasized the need for education and care from childhood, adding that instilling hygienic habits in families can help reduce tooth decay. Adhering to oral hygiene principles, including proper brushing and flossing, can prevent dental problems in the years to come.

The Ministry of Health also has programs to provide dental services to students in rural and urban areas. These services include preventive measures, scaling, and dental restoration, which are offered free of charge in rural areas. Ghorbani added that considering the economic difficulties faced by some families, last year 300,000 toothbrushes and toothpaste were provided for students in 7 deprived provinces of the country.
