The United Arab Emirates announced on Wednesday, September 23 (October 2), the imposition and enforcement of strict sanctions against the branches of Bank Melli Iran. This decision, made following financial violations by the bank, could affect Iran's financial and trade exchanges with neighboring countries.

Reasons for the Sanctions and Their Impacts

The Central Bank of the UAE stated in a press release that these sanctions were implemented due to non-compliance with the current regulatory rules and regulations in the country. The institution emphasized its commitments to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism, announcing that any financial transaction to or from Iran is prohibited for all branches of Bank Melli Iran in this country. This prohibition also includes trade financing and fund transfers.

The United Arab Emirates, particularly the city of Dubai, is recognized as a commercial hub for the Islamic Republic of Iran, and these sanctions could exert more pressure on the Iranian economy. Trade exchanges with this country have undergone severe changes following regional tensions, especially after the U.S. and Israel's war against the Islamic Republic and Iran's retaliatory responses.

International Consequences and Diplomatic Responses

The imposition of new sanctions by the UAE against Bank Melli Iran has intensified U.S. pressures to strike at the economy of the Islamic Republic. Meanwhile, Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, met with Masoud Pezeshkian, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and discussion to resolve disputes. Costa called for an end to Iran's attacks on neighboring countries and a complete restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

At the same time, Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, also discussed diplomatic prospects for ending tensions between the U.S. and Iran in a meeting with Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Foreign Minister. She emphasized that there were no tolls for passing through the Strait of Hormuz before the war, and there should not be any after the war either.

Overall, the new sanctions imposed by the United Arab Emirates against Bank Melli Iran indicate serious challenges for the economy of the Islamic Republic and the diplomatic complexities in the region. These sanctions not only affect Iran's trade relations but may also exacerbate ongoing tensions in international relations.
