Non-linear and Multi-layered Narrative
This documentary follows a non-linear and multi-layered narrative, tracing the life of Hajj Seyyed Davood Hosseini from childhood in one of the cities of Arak and his experiences in carpet weaving and stone carving to his presence in the Shalamcheh and Mersad fronts. In his youth, after migrating to Qom, he experiences apprenticeship in bag-making and works in stone carving, and with the onset of the imposed war, he heads to the front with a forged identity card.
After the war and losing two children, he goes through a phase of working as a truck driver and laborer until he eventually establishes the Firoozabad rebar workshop and achieves financial independence. The narrative structure of the documentary 'The Pain of Companions' recounts several decades of his life during the old age of Seyyed Davood Hosseini, amidst the younger generation and his children, and this narrative is accompanied by historical reconstructions and documentary and archival segments.
This film ultimately emphasizes concepts such as the authenticity of work, human dignity, lawful earnings, the connection between generations, and reliance in the face of the inevitability of poverty by returning to the present time and his metaphorical confrontation with his youth. Saeed Sajadi, the director of this documentary, does not consider his goal to merely recount a biography; rather, he seeks to portray the concept of the dignity of work in contemporary Iranian history. This project, using a combination of historical reconstruction techniques and in-depth interviews, aims to depict the connection between tradition and modernity in the character of the story's hero.
