The documentary 'In the Face of Collapse' has been chosen as Pakistan's official entry for the 2024 Oscars. This historic decision, announced by the selection committee of the Pakistan Academy, is considered a milestone for Pakistan's documentary cinema.
Narration of a Tense Incident
This documentary, which has a thriller atmosphere, addresses one of the most publicized and tense rescue operations in contemporary Pakistan's history. The story of the film revolves around an incident in August 2023 in the Battagram region of northern Pakistan, where after a cable of a cable car broke, eight people, including six students, were left suspended at an altitude of about 275 meters above a valley.
The students were on their way to school when one of the cable car's cables broke, leaving the cabin in a very dangerous position between the ground and the sky. Their rescue operation quickly turned into a national event, with people in Pakistan and audiences outside the country following the operation live.
Role of the Creators and Global Distribution
The film 'In the Face of Collapse', directed by Mohammad Ali Naqvi and in collaboration with Bilal Sami, attempts to reconstruct this incident and the rescue operation from various angles. The creators used footage recorded by witnesses, narratives and testimonies from survivors, as well as reenactments of some scenes with the participation of individuals involved in the rescue operation.
This documentary premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition section and was later screened at the Tribeca Film Festival. The production of this film was done in collaboration with Everwonder Studio, Universal Pictures Content Group, Mindhouse Productions, and Sixty-Fourth Street Media. The theatrical distribution of the film in the UK is handled by Dogwoof, while Abramorama will be responsible for its theatrical release in the USA. 'In the Face of Collapse' is set to be released on October 28 on the Paramount+ streaming service.
This selection has brought the story of the rescue of eight cable car passengers from Battagram into competition for the Oscar in the Best International Feature Film category. However, the presence of a documentary in this competition is considered a historic event for Pakistan. Since 1959, Pakistan has nominated 13 films for this category at the Oscars, but none have succeeded in receiving a final nomination.
Thus, 'In the Face of Collapse', in addition to narrating one of Pakistan's most publicized rescue operations, could hold a special place in the history of this country's cinema at the Oscars; as for the first time, a documentary work is participating as Pakistan's official representative in this competition.
