Following two unprecedented hot summers, British homeowners are facing an increase in land subsidence claims. Henry Biggs, 49, from Stroud in Gloucestershire, is deeply concerned about the state of his home. He says, "We have a wall that has large cracks in it, so much so that we can see into the other room; it feels like we could pass our fingers through it, and pieces of plaster are falling off."
Worrying Cracks
Biggs and his partner noticed deep cracks in their home's walls in June 2025, just a few months after purchasing the house. They submitted a subsidence insurance claim to their insurer, Admiral, and fortunately, the claim was accepted in the spring. However, their concerns do not end there;
Monitoring devices were only recently installed, nearly a year after they filed their initial claim, and they still do not know when repairs will begin. This issue has become a serious dilemma not only for them but for many other families in the UK.
Increase in Insurance Claims
With rising temperatures and droughts in recent years, land subsidence has become a critical problem. Experts believe that climate change and unfavorable geological conditions have had significant negative effects on building structures. As a result, insurers are facing a wave of new claims that could lead to increased insurance costs and negative impacts on the housing market.
Several other families are also suffering from similar situations and are worried about the future of their homes. Given the current conditions, it seems that this dilemma will not be resolved soon and requires more attention from authorities and specialists.
