Tehran's urban management is implementing new programs to address environmental challenges and increase the resilience of green spaces. The Deputy of Green Space at the Parks and Green Space Organization of Tehran Municipality explained the factors affecting the drying and physiological decline of some trees in the capital during an interview.
Factors Affecting Tree Decline
This official initially pointed to climate change as one of the most important factors and stated: "Climate change, the water resource crisis, declining groundwater levels, reduced effective rainfall, rising temperatures, and the intensification of the urban heat island phenomenon are among the factors that lead to the drying of trees."
He added: "Considering that urban green space plays a vital role in improving air quality and enhancing social welfare, it is necessary to take measures to utilize these valuable resources more effectively."
New Urban Management Programs
The Deputy of Green Space at Tehran Municipality further explained that the new programs include strengthening the irrigation system, using drought-resistant species, and increasing public awareness about the importance of preserving trees. He also emphasized the necessity of cooperation between the public and government institutions in this regard, stating: "We must move towards a participatory approach so that all members of society play a role in protecting green spaces."
In this context, organizing educational workshops for citizens and creating incentive programs for individuals who participate in the preservation and maintenance of trees are on the agenda. According to him, these actions can help enhance public culture regarding environmental protection.
Additionally, reviewing and updating existing plans related to green space and creating a suitable environment for the rehabilitation of damaged trees are other programs of this organization. The Deputy Mayor announced the necessity of using modern technologies in green space management, stating: "The use of new technologies can help improve tree maintenance conditions and reduce costs."
Finally, given the importance of green space in urban life, this official called on all institutions and organizations to collaborate in preserving and expanding green space, thereby enhancing the quality of life in Tehran.
