Tehran Municipality has decided to launch a special lane for motorcycles on some highways and urban roads to organize motorcyclist traffic and reduce accident statistics. This plan will first be implemented as a pilot in Region 14 on Shahid Mohammadi Highway.

Purpose of the Plan

Statistics show that nearly 4 million and 990 thousand registered motorcycles are currently in circulation in Tehran. Some of these do not respect the laws, which has led to an increase in motorcycle accidents. Tehran Municipality aims to organize motorcyclist traffic and enhance their safety through this plan. This initiative will also help prevent motorcyclists from using prohibited routes and entering sidewalks.

Successful Global Experiences

This plan has been tested in various countries such as the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, where the population of motorcyclists is high, and has yielded positive results. Research indicates that implementing such plans can reduce motorcycle accident statistics by up to 60 percent. In some Asian cities, this plan has been successfully executed and is recognized as an effective solution for organizing motorcyclist traffic. In contrast, in cities like London, the police have not decided to implement this plan and allow motorcyclists to use bus rapid transit lanes.

Implementing a special lane for motorcyclists in Tehran will not only improve the safety and order of motorcyclist traffic but also protect other pedestrians and vehicle drivers from disturbances caused by improper traffic. This action could lead to a reduction in accidents and an increased sense of safety in the city.

While the study phases of the plan have been completed, more details are expected to be announced by experts next week. If this plan is successful in Region 14, there is a possibility of expanding it to other areas of Tehran. Given the high population of motorcycles in Tehran and the issues arising from their traffic, this plan could be an effective step towards improving urban quality of life.
