Sudden lip swelling upon waking may have various causes. Allergies to cosmetic and hygiene products, food, and even pressure while sleeping are among these reasons. In most cases, diagnosing the cause of swelling becomes easier based on its duration and accompanying symptoms.

Allergies and Allergic Reactions

Allergy is considered one of the main causes of lip swelling. Foods, medications, toothpaste, and lip care products can trigger allergic reactions. In these cases, symptoms such as itching, redness, and hives may be observed, but the absence of these symptoms does not mean that there is no allergy.

If lip swelling is accompanied by symptoms such as swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, or a feeling of suffocation, this may indicate a serious allergic reaction and requires immediate contact with emergency services.

Other Factors and Treatment Methods

Sleeping on one's face and constant pressure on the lips can also cause temporary swelling. Dryness, cracking, and contact with irritants are other contributing factors. Using fragrance-free moisturizers can help in cases caused by dryness.

Infections such as dental and gum infections, inflammation of the skin around the mouth, and cold sores can also be associated with lip swelling. In these cases, symptoms such as pain, localized warmth, spreading redness, or fever can aid in diagnosis. Painful or increasing swelling, especially when accompanied by fever, requires immediate medical evaluation.

Certain medications, especially blood pressure medications, can cause angioedema, which is sudden swelling of the lips, face, or tongue. This condition may even occur some time after starting the medication, and in such cases, immediate medical assessment is essential.

If lip swelling is mild and there are no dangerous symptoms, using a cold compress wrapped in cloth for a few minutes can be beneficial. The main treatment depends on the cause of the swelling, and antihistamines are effective for some allergic reactions, but they are not suitable for all issues. Avoid self-medicating with cortisone or antibiotics and using natural substances like baking soda or honey as a definitive treatment.

If lip swelling recurs, lasts for several days, or is accompanied by pain and other symptoms, seeing a doctor to investigate the cause is necessary. In cases where there is swelling of the tongue or throat or breathing difficulties, one should not wait for spontaneous improvement and should seek emergency assistance immediately.
