Awang Zhao Zhao Fei from Monash University in Melbourne has made significant findings regarding cardiovascular diseases. The researchers found that a gradual decline in functional abilities in older adults may begin years before a heart attack or stroke occurs, providing an early opportunity to identify health risks.

Analysis of Cardiovascular Status

The researchers in this study examined changes in several indicators related to the aging process. Using data from the "Aspirin to Reduce Risk of Initial Vascular Events" (ASPREE) study, the status of 2,403 individuals who later developed cardiovascular problems was compared with 9,612 similar individuals who did not have such issues. In this analysis, data from 12,015 individuals were reviewed.

The researchers examined physical frailty, overall physical and mental abilities, and the impact of physical health on individuals' daily lives. Physical frailty refers to the reduction of bodily reserves and capabilities, which can decrease an individual's ability to cope with illnesses.

Significant Differences in Individuals' Health

The results indicate that individuals who later developed cardiovascular problems had poorer outcomes up to a decade prior, and their physical health had a greater impact on their daily lives. These differences significantly increased in the five years leading up to the onset of cardiovascular issues.

The timing of these differences varied based on the type of disease. For example, differences in individuals who later developed heart failure or coronary artery disease were identified earlier, and in some cases, were observable at least 10 years before the onset of cardiovascular problems.

The findings of this research introduce changes in the ability to perform daily activities as an important indicator in assessing the health of older adults. This study emphasizes the importance of more detailed examination of persistent changes in functional abilities, although it cannot definitively establish a link between functional decline and cardiovascular diseases.

This research has been published in JAMA Cardiology and further studies are needed to clarify how these signs can be used to improve the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
