Sleep specialists have recently announced the existence of a "golden hour" for caffeine consumption that can make the difference between a peaceful sleep and a sleepless night. Since coffee is one of the most popular beverages worldwide, paying attention to the timing and amount of its consumption is very important.

The Role of Caffeine in Nighttime Sleep

Caffeine is known to many as an energizing factor at the start of the day. However, consuming coffee in the late hours of the day can lead to difficulty sleeping. Many people turn to coffee to boost their energy after a busy day, but this habit can have negative consequences for nighttime sleep in the long run.

Staying up late, frequent awakenings during the night, and feeling tired in the morning can lead individuals to consume more coffee the next day, creating a cycle of sleep deprivation and increased caffeine consumption. For this reason, sleep specialists emphasize that the appropriate time to cut off caffeine for each individual should be adjusted based on their sleep schedule.

How to Manage Caffeine Consumption Timing

Sleep specialists recommend that to ensure better sleep, caffeine consumption should be stopped at least 8 to 10 hours before bedtime. This recommendation is especially important for individuals who metabolize caffeine slowly. The half-life of caffeine in healthy adults averages between three to seven hours, and this time can vary for each individual.

For example, a person who goes to sleep at 9 PM should stop caffeine consumption much earlier than someone who stays awake until midnight. In some studies, even consuming 400 milligrams of caffeine, equivalent to about four cups of coffee, six hours before sleep can disrupt nighttime sleep.

In addition to coffee, other sources of caffeine should also be considered. Energy drinks, energy shots, and pre-workout supplements may contain significant amounts of caffeine, and therefore, consuming them close to bedtime can increase the risk of insomnia. Similarly, some types of tea and sodas can also contain considerable caffeine and should be taken into account.

Ultimately, sleep specialists advise individuals to pay attention to product labels and consider all sources of caffeine in the late hours of the day. Simply reducing coffee consumption is not enough; caffeine consumption habits should be reviewed as a whole to experience better sleep.
