Serie A, the prestigious football league of Italy, has witnessed profound changes in recent years. Analyzing the statistics from the 2026-27 season, it becomes clear that out of 580 players present in this league, 397 are foreign. In other words, about 68% of the league's players come from outside Italy, while the share of Italian players has decreased to 183, equivalent to 31%.
Worrying Changes in Team Composition
This statistic clearly shows that out of every three players in Serie A, nearly two are foreign and only one is Italian. Although this does not necessarily mean that foreign players play more than Italians, the reality is that the growth space for domestic players has been severely limited.

Como, as a notable example, has rapidly reached the top level of Italian football and even the Champions League through significant investments and the recruitment of foreign players. This team started its first appearance in the Champions League with a 4-1 victory over Leipzig, but interestingly, it can compete in Serie A without any Italian players in the starting lineup.
Future Challenges for Italian Football
On the other hand, AC Milan has a hopeful sign with 19-year-old Italian forward Alfa Djigo. Djigo was included in the starting lineup at the beginning of the season and even scored a goal. He is the youngest Italian to score for Milan since Patrick Cutrone. However, it should be noted that such successes have not become a common occurrence, and for this reason, the normal state of Italian football has come under serious question.
Although Italy still has quality players, such as Gianluigi Donnarumma and Sandro Tonali, these are only notable exceptions. Players like Chiesa, who is on the bench at Liverpool, indicate the reality that Italian stars no longer have many suitors. This situation could have serious consequences for the Italian national team, which is suffering from a lack of depth in its squad and insufficient players at a high club level.
The emergence of these problems in Italian football is a warning bell that could lead to the consecutive absence of the Azzurri in World Cups. Currently, in one of the most prestigious leagues in the world, finding an Italian player in the lineup of some teams has become a notable occurrence. For example, Como and Juventus have recently played without any Italian players in their starting lineup, which seems very strange considering the history of these clubs.
