Nyasha Chagudra, a psychiatric researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, recently conducted a study on 20 adults suffering from depression, which shows that changes in dietary habits can positively impact the symptoms of this disorder. In this experiment, participants were divided into two groups: one group continued their usual diet while the other reduced their intake of ultra-processed foods.
Impact of Diet on Depression Symptoms
This four-week study allowed researchers to compare depression symptoms in both groups. The results showed that individuals who experienced a reduction in ultra-processed food intake had lower scores on depression assessments compared to their usual diet period. For example, the average score on the PHQ-9 assessment decreased from 8.68 during the usual diet to 5.53 during the period of reduced ultra-processed food intake.

These results suggest that changes in dietary habits could serve as an adjunct method in treating depression. However, researchers emphasize that this study requires further research to gain deeper insights into the effects of dietary changes on depression symptoms.
Challenges of Reducing Ultra-Processed Food Intake
Chagudra noted in discussions with researchers that reducing the intake of ultra-processed foods can be challenging, as these types of foods are often tasty, inexpensive, and readily available. Nevertheless, this study indicates that reducing the consumption of these foods may lead to decreased intake of sugar, fat, and calories, which could help improve depression symptoms.
This research also points out that depression symptoms during the usual diet were less than at the start of the study, suggesting that other factors may also play a role in improving depression symptoms. Despite this, the results obtained from this study can serve as a preliminary basis for conducting larger and more precise studies in the future.
The implications of this research indicate that changes in dietary habits can be an effective approach in treating depression. Researchers hope that by conducting further studies, they can gain a better understanding of the effects of diet on depression and provide new strategies to assist patients suffering from this disorder.
