Protein powder is a simple way to increase protein intake in the diet, but not every beverage is a suitable option for mixing with it. Some liquids can affect the nutritional value, texture of the protein shake, and even its compatibility with an individual's health goals.

Hot Beverages and Acidic Juices

If you drink hot coffee every morning, it may be tempting to add protein powder to it; however, this can cause the protein to clump or curdle. Protein powder is unlikely to fully dissolve in hot liquid, resulting in a lumpy texture in the drink. Additionally, adding whey protein powder to hot liquids can affect some nutrients and make digestion more difficult.

Acidic juices like orange juice, cranberry juice, and pineapple juice are also not suitable combinations for protein powder. The high acidity of these juices can cause whey protein powder to coagulate and curdle. Research has shown that adding protein powder to acidic juices can affect how the body digests and utilizes protein, and may also reduce its antioxidant levels.

Energy Drinks and Alcohol

Energy drinks and carbonated sodas are also not suitable options for making a protein shake. The carbonation in these drinks can create a fizzy state in the shake and lead to unpleasant digestive symptoms such as bloating and gas buildup. Additionally, caution should be exercised when consuming energy drinks; studies have shown that their potential side effects can include insomnia, restlessness, and digestive issues.

Alcohol consumption can also increase the risk of certain cancers, particularly breast cancer, and is associated with issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

Overall, water or milk are better options for combining with protein powder. Cow's milk and plant-based milks like almond milk and soy milk can make the protein shake creamier and add more nutrients. Additionally, adding frozen fruits and leafy greens to the protein shake can enhance its nutritional value.
