Ohad Vezifeh, head of the National Center for Climate and Drought Crisis Management, announced the potential for heavy and flooding rains this fall and winter due to the impact of the El Niño phenomenon on Iran's weather conditions. This phenomenon, which leads to climate changes, can have serious consequences for some provinces.
Risk of Heavy Rainfall in Zagros Provinces
Ohad Vezifeh emphasized that the mountainous provinces of the West and Zagros, especially Ilam, Kermanshah, Kurdistan, northern and eastern Khuzestan, and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, are at the highest risk due to their complex topography and heavy rainfall. These provinces are naturally and geographically structured in a way that heavy rainfall can quickly turn into devastating floods.
Impact of El Niño on Rainfall Patterns
The El Niño phenomenon generally causes an increase in temperature and changes in global rainfall patterns. Vezifeh explained that following this phenomenon, climatic changes may lead to the formation of heavy rainfall fronts in Iran. These fronts can rain suddenly and intensely, increasing the risk of flash floods. Additionally, these changes can also affect agriculture and the country's water resources.
Experts predict that with the onset of fall, sudden and heavy rainfall in these provinces will increase, especially in the months of Aban and Azar. Therefore, it is essential for officials and residents of these areas to be aware of potential hazards and take necessary measures to mitigate possible damages.
Preventive Measures and Warnings
Given the predicted weather conditions, Vezifeh advised local officials to prioritize preventive programs and preparedness for facing floods. These measures could include creating appropriate infrastructure, increasing watershed capacities, and enhancing warning systems.
In conclusion, the head of the National Center for Climate and Drought Crisis Management emphasized the need for cooperation between the community and government institutions to reduce the risks posed by heavy rainfall, stating: "Raising public awareness and increasing their preparedness can significantly reduce casualties and financial losses."
