Ohad Alavi, a member of the Islamic Council of Tehran, spoke about the necessity of developing public transportation in the capital, emphasizing the urban management's plans in this regard. He pointed out serious challenges such as traffic and air pollution, stressing that this period has been one of the most programmatic in the field of public transportation, with efforts being made to develop infrastructure and transportation methods simultaneously.
Budget Allocation for Public Transportation
Alavi stated that 50 percent of Tehran's budget in recent years has been allocated to the transportation sector, adding: "Merely building highways and streets cannot solve the traffic problem." He believes that developing infrastructure alongside expanding public transportation is essential, and for this purpose, projects such as completing metro lines and stations, expanding highways, and new projects are on the agenda.
Expansion of Transportation Modes
This member of the Islamic Council of Tehran pointed out the necessity of expanding various transportation modes throughout the city and said: "Citizens should be able to access one of the public transportation methods such as buses, taxis, metro, bicycles, or scooters within a short distance from their residence." This approach will help increase convenience and reduce travel time for citizens.
Alavi also emphasized the necessity of reducing air pollution, stating: "During this period, the municipality has moved towards electrifying the fleet, and the electrification of buses and taxis, especially in the heavily trafficked central areas of the city, is being pursued." The electrification of motorcycles, especially in District 12 and the market area, can also help reduce air pollution.
Clean Transportation and the Development of Bicycles and Scooters
He mentioned bicycles and scooters as other forms of clean transportation and said: "Given the topographical features of Tehran and the slope of some streets, scooters may have more capability than bicycles for certain routes." However, he emphasized that the development of these transportation methods requires support and backing from urban management. This action can help improve the quality of life for citizens and reduce traffic and air pollution.
Ohad Alavi concluded by emphasizing that the effort to develop public transportation and create the necessary infrastructure is part of the responsibilities of urban management that must be pursued seriously so that Tehran becomes a clean and livable city.
