Recent research shows that individuals do not need to walk 10,000 steps a day to lose weight. According to studies conducted, walking between 4,000 and 10,000 steps can also provide significant health benefits.

The Role of Exercise in Weight Loss

There is insufficient evidence to determine the exact number of steps needed for weight loss. However, experts recommend that individuals should engage in about 150 to 300 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise weekly. This amount translates to approximately 22 to 45 minutes of exercise per day.

Research indicates that to see actual weight loss, individuals need to reach a higher level of activity. Although it is still unclear how many steps per day this level of activity corresponds to, it can be said that the importance of movement and physical activity in this regard is undeniable.

Using Fitness Trackers

In addition to the lack of precise statistics on the appropriate number of steps, fitness trackers and smartwatches can assist individuals in managing their weight. These devices have the capability to monitor activities and set goals, and they can serve as useful tools to encourage individuals to be more active.

In a comprehensive study conducted on nearly 16,000 adults in Japan, researchers examined the effects of the number of steps recorded by smartphones over two years. The results of this research showed that individuals who recorded more steps exhibited better changes in weight, waist circumference, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. For every additional 1,000 steps taken per day, men's weight decreased by an average of 317 grams, and women's weight decreased by 181 grams over two years.

These results also indicate that the trend of weight loss and waist circumference begins at around 7,500 steps per day. In other words, engaging in physical activity and daily walking can help with weight loss and improve individuals' health status.

Conclusion

Ultimately, it is important for each individual to choose appropriate physical activity based on their conditions and needs. While the exact number of steps needed for weight loss is still unclear, regular walking and exercise can contribute to maintaining health and improving quality of life. Therefore, adopting an active lifestyle and monitoring activities can be effective in achieving weight loss goals.
