A new study involving data from nearly 200,000 people shows that individuals who eat late at night and after going to bed face a higher risk of liver diseases such as fatty liver and cirrhosis.
The Impact of Meal Timing on Liver Health
This research, published in the scientific journal "Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology," emphasizes that restricting calorie intake to a few hours before sleep can help maintain liver health. Dr. Robert Willechansky, the lead author of the study from the Oregon Health and Science University, stated that the liver is closely aligned with the body's circadian rhythm, and changing meal times can improve the health of this vital organ.

Risks of Late-Night Eating
According to the findings of this study, individuals who eat late at night face a 20 to 30 percent increased risk of various liver diseases compared to those who do not eat at these hours. Fatty liver disease associated with metabolic disorders is one such condition where fat accumulates in the liver and may lead to more serious damage. Additionally, cirrhosis can be a serious consequence of chronic liver diseases, disrupting the normal function of the liver by creating scar tissue.
Dr. Andrew McHale, a sleep physiology expert, also emphasized the importance of meal timing and explained that eating at night, when the body's biological clock is preparing for sleep, may reduce the body's ability to effectively metabolize food, potentially leading to increased risks of obesity, diabetes, and liver problems in the long term.
Overall, the findings of this research remind us that in addition to the quality of our diet, we should pay special attention to meal timing. However, it is important to note that eating a snack late at night alone does not prove to directly cause liver disease, but it can increase the risk.
