Mehdi Sadeghati, the CEO of the Engineering and Construction Organization of Tehran Municipality, announced the design and start of the southern branch project of the Imam Khomeini Highway. This project is planned to be approximately 2 kilometers long from Hormozan Street to the Ayatollah Saeedi Highway intersection, aiming to facilitate traffic and improve urban infrastructure in the western region of Tehran.
Details of the New Project
The southern branch of the Imam Khomeini Highway is set to separate from the former Jey Square, now known as Hormozan Street, and continue southward. This route will pass through Imamzadeh Abdollah Street and Zarand Street. In this regard, the highway is designed in two levels: the northbound route will be at level minus two, and the southbound route will be at level minus one.

The CEO of the Engineering and Construction Organization announced that on Zarand Street, the highway will come to ground level, with two parallel lanes for both directions continuing to the Ayatollah Saeedi Highway intersection. Each of these lanes will have two traffic lanes and one emergency lane.
Cost Reduction and Increased Efficiency
Sadeghati also mentioned the reduced need for land acquisition, stating: "In the initial plan, over 80,000 square meters of land acquisition was mandatory, which has been reduced to about 5,500 square meters through further reviews and value engineering." This change will not only lead to significant cost savings but will also expedite the project's execution process.
He also announced the widening and geometric correction of Hormozan and Imamzadeh Abdollah streets as part of the zero level of this project, adding that all these measures will contribute to increased safety and facilitate traffic in this area.
The Future of the Project and Hopes
The CEO of the Engineering and Construction Organization noted that alongside this project, an east-west bridge will be constructed at the intersection of Shamsiri Street with the Ayatollah Saeedi Highway, and a three-level intersection will be implemented at the connection point of the southern branch of the Imam Khomeini Highway with the Ayatollah Saeedi Highway and Zarand Street. Sadeghati expressed hope that the execution operations of the southern branch of the Imam Khomeini Highway will begin next year.
With the completion and full operation of the western branch of the Imam Khomeini Highway this fall, studies related to the southern branch of this highway have also been completed, and it is expected that this new project will help alleviate traffic problems and improve the quality of life for citizens in western Tehran.
