J.D. Vance, the U.S. Vice President, has proposed in a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, that comprehensive peace negotiations between the two countries be resumed. This letter was sent last week through Qatari intermediaries and was delivered to Rezaei on Sunday. Vance emphasized in this letter that he will personally lead the U.S. negotiating team.
Iran's Reaction to Vance's Proposal
According to an Iranian official, Iranian leaders have initially welcomed this proposal, as many of them consider Vance to be an influential figure who can help end the conflicts. Mohsen Rezaei was expected to provide Tehran's official response by Thursday. It has also been reported that Donald Trump reviewed and approved the letter before it was sent.

Current Sensitive Position
This initiative has been proposed at a sensitive time. Trump is considering the possibility of resuming military attacks against Iran, which may occur after the upcoming midterm elections in the United States next Tuesday. The U.S. military has prepared a broader list of potential targets, including energy infrastructure and other vital centers of Iran's economy.
Tehran has warned that it will respond vigorously in the event of an attack. Despite these threats, Vance's letter emphasizes the necessity of resolving disputes through direct negotiations. Vance also indicated that the nuclear issue should be discussed from the very beginning of the negotiations.
The letter did not specify a time or place for the negotiations, but according to American and Iranian officials, direct talks may begin next week in Qatar or Turkey. If Tehran accepts Vance's proposal, negotiations will officially start without preconditions.
Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, stated in a message on social media that Iran's armed forces are ready to defend the homeland, but Iran continues to give diplomacy a chance for success. He emphasized that Tehran is in close contact with intermediaries to consider proposals that would make the implementation of Iran's "seven-day plan" possible.
This plan, which includes lifting the maritime blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and releasing part of Iran's frozen assets, states that after these actions, Iran will reopen the strait and begin negotiations.
Vance's effort to initiate negotiations is the latest action by the U.S. government to end a war that has disrupted the global economy and may aid the Democrats' victory in next week's elections. Polls show that a majority of voters are dissatisfied with Trump's handling of the Iran war.
