Gholamreza Goudarzi, head of the Statistical Center of Iran, announced regarding the timing of the release of new statistics on vacant houses that we are working to prepare a report on the items collected in the population and housing census by March 2026.
Separate Process for Identifying Vacant Houses
Goudarzi referred to the issue of vacant houses and stated that this matter has a separate process and does not solely fall within the responsibilities of the Statistical Center. He also mentioned that another agency is responsible for identifying and examining vacant houses. However, the Statistical Center collaborates with that agency to produce this data.

The head of the Statistical Center of Iran emphasized: "Our effort is to ensure that the statistics on vacant houses are published within the desired timeframe through the collaborations made, but to announce a definitive result, we must wait for the related process to be completed."
Challenges and Complexities of Identification
Goudarzi, referring to the complexities of identifying vacant houses, explained that in the census, identifying individuals' residences is done based on statistical blocks. He noted that linking each individual to their place of residence requires specific algorithms, and the accuracy and reliability of these algorithms can impact the final result.
He continued: "The accuracy of these algorithms in assigning individuals to places of residence and the reliability of the information individuals provide about their residences are effective in the final result." Goudarzi also mentioned identifying vacant locations and stated that this task requires examining a set of information and indicators.
Information related to the number of vacant units, tenants, second homes, and units that have changed their use are categorized into different statistical categories, and it must be determined how each of this information can be obtained. The head of the Statistical Center of Iran added: "Part of the information is collected within the framework of the census, and another part, including information related to energy consumption and other specialized indicators, requires collaboration with ministries and relevant agencies."
A Multifaceted and Time-Consuming Process
Gholamreza Goudarzi noted that for this reason, determining the status of vacant houses is a multifaceted process, and to achieve accurate statistics, various information and indicators must be examined together. He emphasized the importance of this issue and spoke about inter-agency collaborations to improve the information gathering process, expressing hope that they could soon provide reliable statistics in this area.
