Gholamreza Bahush, a pediatric hematologist and oncologist, emphasized that many parents believe that dark circles and hollowness under children's eyes are signs of anemia, and he examined this issue. In fact, statistics show that over 95 percent of patients visiting specialists think that these color changes mean the presence of anemia, while this is not necessarily true.
Atopy; Hereditary Allergy in Children
Gholamreza Bahush explained in an interview with the "Here is the Doctor" program on Radio Salamat that dark circles and hollowness under the eyes can often be a sign of atopy disease, or intrinsic allergy. This disease is a type of hereditary allergy that usually exists in parents and is passed on to their children. Symptoms of this disease can start from infancy and include eczema or skin inflammation in the form of dry skin in the cheek area.

Accurate Diagnosis and Avoiding Mistakes
Bahush also referred to the connection between atopy and environmental allergies such as plants and flowers, adding that inflammation around the eyes, frequent sneezing, allergic rhinitis, and allergic sinusitis are other signs of this condition. He noted that many children with airway diseases who are overly sensitive show their symptoms with these types of allergies.
In conclusion, Bahush advised parents to pay attention to paleness in the areas around the mouth and under the cheeks, as these changes can be one of the main signs of atopy. He emphasized that if these color changes are observed, parents should check whether they or their spouse have a history of allergies, eczema, or similar allergies. This attention to detail can help with more accurate diagnosis and proper treatment and prevent misdiagnoses, such as merely assuming anemia.
