The G7 has issued a statement requesting the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately stop arming and supporting the Houthis of Yemen. This statement was released following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the G7 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and particularly emphasizes the need for an immediate end to Houthi military attacks.
Call to End Houthi Attacks
In this statement, the foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States have called on the Houthis to immediately cease all military operations and attacks. They emphasized that threats and attacks on the movement of commercial vessels must end, and the diplomatic path to find a political solution should be resumed.

UK Support for Saudi Arabia
Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in response to Saudi Arabia's request for military support, stated that the country has temporarily agreed to conduct defensive air refueling operations. Burnham said this decision was made after consulting with the Secretary of Defense and the Foreign Secretary. This military support will be limited to refueling Saudi aircraft for defense against Houthi attacks.
The timeframe for implementing this support, according to officials, will begin in the coming days and may last several weeks. This action comes particularly as the Houthis have increased their attacks in the Red Sea and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in recent months, directly affecting commercial traffic in these areas.
China's Message to Iran
In connection with these developments, some news sources have reported, citing three informed Iranian sources, that China has privately asked Iran to use its influence to rein in the Houthis. This request was made following Saudi Arabia's appeal to China for help in containing the Houthis. China has consistently called for restraint and dialogue to ensure maritime security in its official positions, but the private message to Tehran indicates that Beijing is seeking to control the situation in the region and maintain its energy transit routes.
Given that the Houthis are supported by Tehran, increasing tensions in this region could have serious implications for maritime security and global trade. The foreign ministers of the G7 emphasized that Iran's arming and support of the Houthis constitutes a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions and must be stopped immediately.
The Future of Tensions in Yemen and the Region
As the G7 statement and international calls for de-escalation and an end to the war in Yemen are made, concerns remain about the impacts of this conflict on regional security and global trade. Particularly, the recent Houthi conflicts in the Red Sea have seriously threatened the security of trade routes. Given the economic dependencies of various countries on these routes, efforts to find a political and diplomatic solution to the Yemen crisis seem increasingly necessary.
