The Freedom Prize of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation will be awarded to the people of Iran on Saturday, November 7, and Prince Reza Pahlavi will receive this award as their representative. This choice, since its announcement on September 14, has faced varied reactions from Iranians and political figures in Germany, raising questions and criticisms.

Analysis of Reza Pahlavi's Selection

The selection of Reza Pahlavi as the representative of the people of Iran to receive the Freedom Prize has been met with both support and opposition. Some critics believe that it is questionable why a specific political figure should be chosen to represent all the people of Iran and what the criteria for this selection were. In response to these criticisms, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation clarified that Reza Pahlavi is "neither the award winner nor the elected representative of the people of Iran," but he acts merely as a custodian of this award to hand it over to the elected representatives of the people of Iran in the future.

The Freedom Prize and Its History

The "Freedom Prize" has been awarded every two years since 2006 to individuals who have played a role in promoting a liberal civil society and defending freedom. This award is largely symbolic and does not carry a cash prize. The award ceremony will take place at the historic St. Paul's Church in Frankfurt, where the first national parliament of Germany convened in 1848.

It is worth noting that the selection of the award winners has never been without controversy, and in 2010, the awarding of the prize to Necla Kelek, a German-Turkish author, sparked protests from the Central Council of Muslims in Germany. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation emphasized that the choice of Reza Pahlavi as the representative of the people of Iran is a decision made after thorough consideration by its board.

Stephan Zubisch, the chairman of the board, mentioned that Reza Pahlavi is the most recognized figure of the opposition and that his positions on free elections, the separation of religion from government, and women's rights were influential factors in his selection. The foundation also referred to its history of collaboration with Iranian organizations in exile and human rights defenders, emphasizing that it makes its decisions independently.

Meanwhile, Reza Pahlavi, in an interview with the media, thanked the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for recognizing the struggle of the people of Iran and stated that this is a heavy responsibility, but it is not a new one for him. He also referred to his commitment to leading the struggle for freedom in Iran and transitioning away from the Islamic Republic.

This selection and the awarding of the prize to Reza Pahlavi have become a highly debated and contentious issue, generating widespread reactions on social media. Some users have supported this decision, while others have criticized it. This matter has also reached the Frankfurt City Council, and the disagreements in this regard are clearly evident.
