On Friday, EU member states held an important meeting to discuss France's proposal to release part of the diesel reserves. This action comes in response to pressures from the United States and aims to control the significant rise in fuel prices.

Details of France's Proposal

According to available information, European countries have responded positively to this proposal and are set to release 50 million barrels of diesel, while members of the International Energy Agency will also release 50 million barrels of crude oil from their reserves. This decision could have a profound impact on the global fuel market.

The French Ministry of Economy and Energy has not yet responded to media requests for comments on this matter. However, it seems that this action is following pressures from the Donald Trump administration on European countries, warning them that they either need to draw from their emergency reserves or face the risk of a ban on U.S. diesel exports.

U.S. Pressures and Their Consequences

The Trump administration has asked major European countries, particularly France and Germany, to release 100 million barrels of diesel from their reserves within 20 days. This pressure comes as fuel prices in the U.S. have surged, and Trump is considering a potential ban on diesel exports to reduce them. This action, especially ahead of the midterm elections on November 3, could be used as an electoral strategy.

The global supply of diesel has significantly decreased due to the Iran war and the ban on Russian exports. Additionally, Chinese refineries have halted fuel exports in October to bolster their domestic reserves. These factors, along with damage to several Russian refineries from attacks in Ukraine, have complicated the diesel market situation.

Future Discussions and Implications of the Agreement

During this meeting, which included EU countries, discussions were also held regarding the U.S. commitment to refrain from imposing unilateral bans on diesel exports. Leaders of the G7 countries may discuss next steps in a phone call. Currently, France holds the presidency of the G7, which could play a significant role in shaping future agreements.

The International Energy Agency, which has 32 members, agreed in March to a coordinated release of 400 million barrels from strategic oil reserves following supply disruptions caused by the Iran war. This action is considered the largest release of its kind in the history of international energy activities.
