Eating with a close friend or romantic partner can help reduce the spike in blood sugar after a meal and return it to normal levels more quickly. Recent research has shown that social connections can reduce stress and affect metabolic health in the long term. Chronic stress may disrupt blood sugar regulation and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
The Impact of Friends on Blood Sugar
In a study involving 108 participants, they consumed 102 grams of white wheat bread containing 50 grams of carbohydrates each time. This meal was examined in two different conditions, namely alone and with a close person. The results showed that when individuals ate with a companion, their blood sugar increase was lower, and their blood sugar returned to normal levels more quickly.

The Role of Emotional Support
Holly Jones, a psychology professor at Medgar Evers College, emphasizes that the presence of others can act as a protective factor against stress. This study clearly shows that social interactions can affect the body's physiological responses and the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Additionally, when individuals are under stress, the presence of a close friend can mitigate the negative effects of stress.
Joan Rinker, a diabetes education and care specialist, states that stress is often linked to increased blood sugar. She explains that having a friend present may help an individual feel calmer and pay more attention to their meal, which can influence blood sugar regulation.
Moreover, previous studies have shown that loneliness and social isolation can lead to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Individuals who feel lonelier are at double the risk of developing diabetes. Rinker warns that long-term loneliness can affect both blood sugar and mental health.
This research was conducted in experimental conditions, and its results cannot be generalized to all everyday situations. According to Jones, the quality of social interaction may also be important; therefore, individuals with diabetes should discuss the importance of having a calm and positive space when dining with friends and loved ones.
