Drinking a glass of water immediately after waking up has become one of the popular and recommended habits among individuals. Recent scientific studies show that this simple habit has positive physiological consequences for the body.

Dehydration and Its Effects on Health

Many people wake up in a state of mild dehydration after several hours of nighttime sleep and not receiving fluids. This seemingly insignificant dehydration can have unpleasant consequences such as decreased energy levels, persistent fatigue, reduced mental efficiency, and digestive problems. Drinking a glass of water at the start of the day is a natural way to rehydrate tissues and activate the digestive system.

The body's water level has a direct relationship with mental clarity and feelings of vitality. When the body faces a lack of fluids, the volume and flow of blood sent to the brain decrease. This phenomenon can lead to excessive fatigue, feelings of confusion, and difficulty maintaining concentration. Findings from an experimental study indicate that young people who were deprived of fluids for twelve hours experienced more fatigue and reduced attention compared to those who were hydrated.

The Role of Water in the Digestion Process

Drinking water in the morning prepares the digestive system for processing the day's food. Fluids act as lubricants and help the smooth movement of waste in the large intestine. Research data confirm that regular consumption of water and watery foods minimizes the risk of digestive disorders.

The entry of water into the stomach in the morning, along with some movement or drinking coffee, stimulates the bowel reflex and facilitates easier elimination. However, in individuals who drink enough water throughout the day, this accelerated effect is less noticeable.

Although drinking water immediately after waking is beneficial, clinical specialists emphasize that the total fluid intake over 24 hours is more important. According to clinical guidelines, women need about eleven and a half cups and men need fifteen and a half cups of fluids.

Considering the water content in vegetables, fruits, and soups, aiming to drink nine cups of pure water for women and thirteen cups for men is sufficient. Drinking water at the start of the morning is a quick start for those who usually forget to drink water during busy working hours.

A regular glass is an ideal volume to start the day, and suddenly filling the stomach with a large amount of water may lead to feelings of heaviness or reflux. Additionally, some common beliefs about water have been challenged; for example, the temperature of water does not significantly affect the metabolic rate, and cold water does not harm the digestive system.

The best indicator for assessing hydration is the color of urine; light yellow indicates adequate water intake, while dark yellow signals the body's urgent need for more fluids. Individuals who do not drink enough fluids wake up feeling sluggish and heavy in the mornings, and elderly individuals whose sense of thirst has diminished will benefit the most from drinking water in the morning.

Ultimately, if there is a reluctance to drink plain water, adding a few drops of lemon or drinking mild herbal teas can be a pleasant option for maintaining the body's fluid balance.
