Astronomers have recently succeeded in discovering a new icy object named 2026 ED138 in the cold and distant outskirts of the solar system. This discovery could likely enhance our understanding of the boundaries of the solar system and add a new object to the family of dwarf planets.

Description of the Latest Discovery by Astronomers

This object, identified using the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile, has a size ranging from 600 to 1,500 kilometers. If these measurements are confirmed, 2026 ED138 will rank among the largest known dwarf planets. This object is located about 46 times the average distance from the Earth to the Sun, which is even farther than Pluto.

This cold and distant region is known to host a large number of icy objects, many of which remain unknown. With the discovery of 2026 ED138, there is a possibility of adding a new member to the list of dwarf planets, which includes Pluto, Eris, Haumea, Makemake, and Ceres.

Conditions Required for Confirmation as a Dwarf Planet

For a celestial object to be recognized as a dwarf planet, it must have enough mass for its gravity to nearly make it spherical. Initial estimates suggest that 2026 ED138 may meet this criterion, but its exact size is still uncertain.

Matt Holman, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who first identified this object, notes that this discovery demonstrates the high capacity of the Vera Rubin Observatory and other telescopes to identify other exciting objects.

Scientists can use the ALMA telescope array in Chile to determine the actual size of this object. This tool, by receiving thermal radiation from the object itself, allows for a more accurate estimation of its dimensions. Until then, 2026 ED138 remains a candidate for a new dwarf planet in the solar system.
