Lionel Messi has spent his professional career breaking records and collecting championship trophies, but his latest honor comes from the world of science rather than the football field. Researchers in South America have officially named a newly discovered plant species after the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, solidifying his status as a global icon.
The Splendor and Beauty of the New Plant
This discovery highlights the extraordinary reach of this Argentine and proves that his name holds significance beyond the stadiums of top-flight football and international soccer. By naming a new plant species in honor of Messi, scientists have immortalized him. A recent academic study details the discovery of a unique plant found in the high Andes, particularly in central and southern Peru.

Researchers decided to name the species Salvia messii after this iconic football player. This creates a direct balance between the resilience of the plant and the enduring brilliance of the captain of Inter Miami. The plant features stunning light blue and white flowers, a natural palette reflecting the famous colors of the Argentine national team jersey.
A Unique Tribute
This process followed strict botanical naming protocols that utilize Latin roots for classifying new biological findings. By adding the letter “i” to the end of Messi's last name, the scientific community has named this plant. This act is rare in the academic world and is typically reserved for individuals who have made a profound impact on global culture.
The plant itself is a member of the family Lamiaceae, commonly known as the mint family, and has garnered attention for its potential medicinal properties. Biologists have noted the plant's remarkable adaptability, a trait that allows it to thrive in thin air and rugged terrain where few species can survive.
This hardiness may be the most fitting tribute to Messi, whose career has been defined by his ability to overcome physical challenges and maintain excellence at the highest levels of professional sports for over two decades.
