Ahmad Ismailzadeh, the Director General of the Community Nutrition Improvement Office of the Ministry of Health, reported in his recent press conference on the alarming situation of overweight and obesity among students. He announced that about 24 to 25 percent of students in Iran are overweight and obese, a matter that can have serious consequences for the physical and mental health of this vulnerable group.
Distribution of Nutritional Supplements in Schools
Ismailzadeh further referred to the actions of the Ministry of Health and said: "We distribute one iron supplement weekly for 16 weeks in girls' schools to prevent anemia." This action is particularly important in conditions where healthy and adequate nutrition may be challenged in many families. Additionally, the distribution of vitamin D supplements on a monthly basis in boys' and girls' schools for those over 12 years old has also been considered.

School Milk Program Limited to Public Schools
The Director General of the Community Nutrition Improvement Office referred to the school milk program and said: "This program is specific to public schools and cannot be provided for all schools due to rising prices." Thus, this program is only implemented in public elementary schools, and families of students in non-profit schools will not benefit from these advantages.
These actions are designed to improve the nutrition and health of students, but given the high percentage of overweight and obesity, there is a need for more attention and reforms in this area. Ismailzadeh also pointed out that obesity at a young age can lead to chronic diseases in the future, including diabetes and heart diseases.
Challenges in Nutritional Programs
One of the challenges in nutritional programs is the insufficient access to healthy food resources in some areas of the country. This issue requires inter-sectoral cooperation and special attention to underdeveloped areas. Additionally, raising awareness among families about the importance of proper nutrition and healthy eating habits should also be prioritized.
Given the statistics provided, it seems that the Ministry of Health needs to adopt more comprehensive and effective approaches to reduce the rates of overweight and obesity among students. This requires cooperation from parents, teachers, and school officials to cultivate a healthier and more aware generation.
