The forces of the Environmental Protection Unit of Khuzestan province intensified monitoring and patrolling operations in the border wetland of Hawr al-Azim coinciding with the start of the migratory bird season. During this operation, eight illegal bird hunting structures known as reserves were identified and completely destroyed. Additionally, equipment related to these reserves was confiscated and a boat was also seized.
Combating Environmental Violations
Mohammad Alvandi, the commander of the Environmental Protection Unit of Khuzestan, stated regarding this operation: "Our goal with this action is to combat environmental violations and ensure the biological safety of migratory birds." He emphasized that the construction of reserves during the migration season poses a serious threat to the biodiversity of the wetland and stressed the necessity of strict action against violators according to regulations. Alvandi also mentioned that assessing the security of the area and preventing the recurrence of violations are among the other objectives of this monitoring.
Importance of Hawr al-Azim Wetland
The Hawr al-Azim wetland, as one of the largest border wetlands between Iran and Iraq, is located in the southwestern part of Khuzestan province within the boundaries of the cities of Hoveyzeh and Dasht-e Azadegan. This wetland, situated 100 to 120 kilometers from Ahvaz, plays key roles in controlling dust, moderating climate, and supporting the livelihoods of local residents. However, in recent years, due to climate change, reduced water inflow, and the implementation of upstream projects in the watersheds of the Tigris and Karkheh rivers, it has faced a decline in water levels and dryness in some areas.
The commander of the Environmental Protection Unit of Khuzestan emphasized that preserving wetland habitats requires active participation from local communities and environmental enthusiasts. According to him, this participation can strengthen conservation efforts and increase public awareness about the importance of protecting biodiversity.
